Fly.Union
Columbus, OH
Fly.Union is a group comprised of three artists whose individual personality and talent blend to create the music causing fans to follow their every move.
iYe (also known as “Ivan Houpe”) is one half of the production duo known as MonkeyWrench. He spent much of his youth traveling with his father, a member of Heatwave, an international funk/disco group. Growing up immersed in the music industry provided experiences allowing for his success both as a producer/engineer and an emcee.
JaySwif (also known as “Jonathan Tribune”) is also an emcee/producer artist. Alike his MonkeyWrench counterpart, his father too has musical ties as a jazz/funk musician. This along with his plethora of music knowledge further creates the variety and versatility of sound from this young producer.
Jerreau (last name “Smith”) brings the rhyming skills and wordplay that further separates him and Fly.Union from the rest. A recognizable tone coupled with a strong, witty delivery allows his lyrics to remain “catchy” to the average listeners while creating a thought-provoking response from your most avid hip-hop fans.
The Top is the Ultimate goal. The challenges conquered and experiences gained are the influences behind an artist’s creativity. You can hear and feel the creativity drawn from those experiences in the music from Jerreau, JaySwif and Iye collectively known as Fly Union. This is the reason why Fly Union is quickly Ascending the music industry. Beginning with their frequent mixtape collaborations with world-renowned DJ, Mick Boogie, and now the scheduled releases of their Value Pack series, the influences are reaching the ears of fans all over the world and the response is a desire for More. More in-house produced beats by JaySwif and Iye (known as Monkey Wrench). More Collaborations such as recent features with Big Sean, Curren$y, Willie the Kid, Dom Kennedy and Chip the Ripper. And More inspiring Lyrics from Fly Union. More is on the Way. Follow them on their Way to the Top – The Ultimate Goal.
Interview:
TheOneMic: How did you get your name?
Fly.U: Fly Union started originally like Wu Tang as a collective of artists/musicians. Fly Union consists of iYe, Jay Swif and Jerreau.
TheOneMic: If you have multiple people in your group, what are their names and instruments?
Iye: producer, emcee
Jay Swif: producer, emcee
Jerreau: emcee
TheOneMic: When did you start pursuing music as a career? What sacrifices have you had to make?
Fly.U: We all have been involved with music all of our lives. Jay Swif and Iye have their fathers that are musicians in notable jazz bands, while Jerreau’s father was a singer.
TheOneMic: What / who are your influences?
Fly.U: There are a variety of influences from old school hip hop legends as well as jazz/blues musicians from back in the day. I think our lives and the people/fans around us are influences seen in our music.
TheOneMic: Do you do any other art besides music?
We all do something. Everything you see, hear, feel from Fly Union originated from Fly Union. From the music, videos, merchandise, etc.
TheOneMic: What makes your sound different than the other group?
Fly.U: Have you heard TGTC…yeah it’s self explanatory.
TheOneMic: What does your family think about you being in a group?
Fly.U: We were all raised to pursue our passion and dreams at all costs. So family support is important for any career.
TheOneMic: What are you listening to right now?
Fly.U: Aside from TGTC, I think we have a mixture of music playing currently. From classical jazz all the way up to your current crop of hip hop artists.
TheOneMic: How has your life changed since you have been in the music game?
Fly.U: Said it best in the track we have with Currensy. “Shit done changed, but Imma stay the same.” Just always working.
TheOneMic: Where do you see yourself in five months? five years?
Fly.U: Hopefully doing more of the same and continuing to make an impact with our music.
